Those are the things that I would want as a DM in NWN. Just imagine a table top session and all of the tools that you bring to the table as a DM. You should have been able to access areas without having load them like a player client. It should have been something like a spreadsheet of character, encounters, spells, items, inventories, and effects, that you can allow you access to any object in the module without having to have an avatar at all. The fact that they shipped the game without really making a DM interface at all, but instead just a glorified player interface, was a crying shame, IMO. (What? You mean I have to physically navigate an avatar to the location of the object I want to access, and then use an item to bring up a dialog menu to do something as simple as look at a players inventory, or character sheet?) It was still a very clunky way of doing these things. The wand made it meet the minimum level of playability, IMO. The nice thing is that the NWN2 DMFIO changes are in the context menues them selves so everything you want to do is a R Click away. NWN2's DM client is getting better but still a little weak in some key areas. Want to create Encounters on the fly? No problem. Want to access player inventory? No problem. Basically anything you want to do you can set up. The Patched version of 1 is great especially when you add in the the DMFI wand you complin about. The DM interface that shipped with the game was a joke. You know, something that could bring up a party table with stuff like Hit Points and AC, the ability to jump your view to various locations where PCs might be, access to encounter tables and treasure tables that are setup for your module, not just the master list where an "easy" encounter gives you 4 dragons, etc. I am talking about an interface that you could actually use to manage a game. I am not talking about a little D&D cartoon Dungeon Master avatar running around on a My Little Pony, using a hacked wand that he has to pull out of inventory, to access a player's character sheet. If you get NWN2, definitely go straight for the Mask of the Betrayer xpac, it has a game mechanic that pisses off some, but otherwise it pwns the first game. that is a MUST play for an NWN fan, and if you played the original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Repulic, you'll see a lot of influences between the two games, great stuff. Same goes for the SoU expansion, although that one generally gets a better rep thanks in part to the prestige classes. For the offical Bioware expansions, although I personally liked the original campaign and it's story, most people didn't so YMMV. Back in the day we used the Halls of Advanced Training, but there's prolly much better ones released since. That's just scratching the surface of course, waaay too many great ones out there to list.Īlso, a lot of modules ask that you start off w/ specific character levels or classes mixes so be sure to d/l a leveling mod.

~ 3rd Adventure series (another trilogy I think) ~ Twilight (I remember this was Rick Berton) Off the top of my head I recall a few (sans authors) There's also a LOT of other great modules not made by those two that rule. As mentioned, Adam Miller, too, was badass and between he and Stefan the made an absurd volume of really top-notch stuff many offer storylines that carry across several modules if you're a roleplaying junkie.

His later stuff got much more sophisticated in both storyline and scripting etc. I remember the Penultima series by Stefan Gagne was pretty good, but was his earlier work where he made a name for himself.

I remember really digging that.Īlthough I thought NWN2 was okay, the best thing about it was the ability to have a full party otherwise, the original NWN was better IMO. A quick Google search brings up Penultima.

The name "Stefan Gagne" jumped out at me. Should I re-buy NWN or buy NWN2? What are the must play campaigns for each? I want to play some of the aftermarket content.
